Windows Live Writer Rocks!!

If you are anyways connected to the blogosphere, you must have heard about WL Writer - the new free blogging tool from MS stables. And it rocks. I tried using it with Spaces (this post), Wordpress and Blogger and it works great on all 3.

The House Elf Economy

<confession> I am a huge Harry Potter fan and this post is heavily influenced by the HP universe</confession>

There is an interesting debate going on in the blogosphere in the last couple of weeks. It started with Jason "king of blogs' Calacanis offering to pay top Digg/Reddit/Flickr users to 'work' for Netscape portal that he runs for AOL

Before launching the new Netscape I realized that Reddit, NewsVine, Delicious, and DIGG were all driven by a small number of highly-active users. I wrote a blog post about what drives these folks to do an hour to three hours a day of work for these sites which are not paying them for their time. In other words, they are volunteering their services. The response most of these folks gave back to me were that they enjoyed sharing the links they found and that they got satisfaction out of being an "expert" or "leader" in their communities.

Excellent... excellent (say that in a Darth Vadar/Darth Calacanis voice for extra impact).

That is exactly what bloggers told Brian and I three years ago when we started. Given that, I have an offer to the top 50 users on any of the major social news/bookmarking sites:

We will pay you $1,000 a month for your "social bookmarking" rights. Put in at least 150 stories a month and we'll give you $12,000 a year. (note: most of these folks put in 250-400 stories a month, so that 150 baseline is just that--a baseline).
There was a huge stir in response to the article with Kevin Rose of Digg chipping in with his thoughts and several other blogging luminaries offering their 2 cents

This whole debate reminds me of S.P.E.W. or Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare. You see in Harry Potter series, Hermione Granger starts a crusade (rather a failed crusade) to ensure that house elves get paid for the work they do for the wizards (which they currently do for free). Problem is, house elves do not want to be paid. They consider it an insult or act on the master's part that shows he does not care about them. When a wizard gives a piece of clothing to a house elf, it means he is releasing it from its care and asking it to fend for itself.

In the blogosphere universe, Jason Calacanis is Hermione (figuratively; also ignore the gender), albeit with an ulterior motive. He wants the 'house elves' (top users of Digg/Reddit/Flickr users - again this is for metaphorical purpose, no slander intended) to be paid. The elves (at least the top ones) consider it an insult and feel that someone is putting a price on their work, which they do to help the community (and also incidently helps increase the bank balance of Kevin Rose et al). Also the wizarding community (the founders and venture backers of startups who wish to profit from UGC - user generated content and the Long Tail) cry foul on this act of Calacanis.

So what is the climax - well at least in the HP universe, poor Hermione seems to have got busy helping Harry finish off Voldemort (oops, you-know-who) and this issue seems to have deflected to the sidelines. This may very well happen in the blogosphere as well. A few remarks here and there after which things will cool down. Calacanis will be back to the orginal problem of getting Netscape its crown of old days, Kevin Rose back to increasing his bank balance and the house elves back to their merry ways of blogging, video submitting, digging, tagging, sharing, stuff that they enjoy doing and don't mind someone else making money off.

Well, there are always surprises..........

One year of love

I have been meaning to write this for quite some time but having a broken neck, back and ankle doesn’t really help. So finally after much procrastination, I am finally trying to string words together to represent the myriad of thoughts and feelings swarming in my heart.

Ever since childhood, I dreamt of having a girlfriend. And when I say childhood, I mean it. I distinctly remember being in second grade and having feelings for a girl. In fourth grade, I told my mom about having serious thoughts about a girl. In fifth grade, a girl told the whole class that she is getting married to me. I was flattered but she was not the girl I was pining for. I have repented this decision for a long time since she turned out to be one of the gorgeous specimens of fairer sex. After that I had single-sided affairs (where I like the girl but the feelings are not reciprocated) with plenty of girls. I have the record of loving two girls whom I had never spoken to (I still haven’t). I never really got desperate because the amazing tradition Indians have around arranged marriage. So I knew that in case my valiant efforts failed, I can still resort to Mom and Dad finding a beautiful wife for me.

One year ago, I said 6 words that changed my life. Never ever would I have imagined that 6 words (that I really didn’t even mean) would have such a dramatic influence on the course of my life. But they did (in case you are wondering, I didn’t say ‘I love you’ twice). I said those words to a girl I met on yahoo chat. For six months, we were friends, chatting mainly on MSN messenger, though I had never ever talked (on the phone) to her, leave aside meeting. Then she vanished. A month later, I saw her on Yahoo and I asked where she had been. She confessed her feelings about me. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. Here I was, after 16 years of pining after women, being pined over by a girl. In the rush of the moment, I said yes. What was I to do? Here was the culmination of 16 years of valiant efforts. The fact that she was an unknown entity in the labyrinth we call Internet and my only interaction with her was via TCP packets, didn’t really matter.

I have heard a few success stories around people meeting over Internet. I have heard a significantly more number of horror stories. I would categorize mine as a Bollywood-ishtyle masala movie. The past one year has had drama, action, romance, tragedy (very less, thankfully), comedy and thrill. But the fact that has emerged is that I am one lucky person. To give an analogy, I was wading through a coal mine and found a diamond. Diamond, whose luster and shine have brightened my life; shown me what I was missing for 23 years of my life.

Love is word that in my humble opinion is over-used and less understood. I don’t claim to have understood it either. But what I have realized is that you don’t need to understand it. Love is like modern art, if you try to understand it, you will never enjoy it. It is something to be experienced. Like a roller-coaster ride. If you ask someone how the ride was, you will hear one of the three things – it was awesome, it was OK, it was awful. But unless you strap on the belt and ride it yourself, you will never know the surge of feelings that it can create.

I thank God for taking me on this roller coaster ride. And I thank that wonderful woman who has shown me that it is possible to reach infinity. I had read that love has no bounds; she proved it to me.

Vancouver Trip part 1

Thanksgiving arrived and we decide to thank ourselves by Going to Canada and getting our H1 stamped. Paaji and Madhur were deliberating till the last moment and finally decided to take the plunge. Santy made sure that everybody had all the documents. Left Seattle around 12 (because Madhur and Pammi showed up late). As luck would have it, all restaurants were closed so we couldn’t eat lunch. So we departed as it is.

Stopped en route at dennys to feed our hungry stomachs. Reached Vancouver without any incidents around 4. Checked in Ramada room that Madhur had booked. One small room and 5 people, bahut naa-insaafi hai. Par kya kare.

Aaram se aalsi log so gaye. Raat ko gaye Indian Chinese restaurant. Hot n sour soup, vegetable dumplings, Manchurian kote, hakka noodles……aa ha ha. Kya lazeez khana. Ghar aake H1 documents check kiye aur so gaye.

End of day 1.

Thanks, thanks to thee, my worthy friend,
For the lesson thou hast taught!
Each role has its special function
Every one plays his part
Together we create a successful product
That everyone can be proud of

Now trying using Outlook

My latest blog entry (http://blogs.msdn.com/mayurk):

The Redmond PM - the whole poem

Henry Longfellow inspired me to write a whole poem on Microsoft PM, borrowing from his lovely composition The Village Blacksmith. Disclaimer - this is purely for creative purposes and no money is being made. (If someone sues me, I will plead fair use)

So here it is -

In the evergreen state of Washington
The Redmond Campus stands;
The PM, a shrewd man is he,
One of the many on this land;
And the grey cells of his sharp brain
Are lithe as rubber bands.

His spec is detailed, signed-off and long,
the whole product spectrum it span
His presentations are jazzy and fun
His scenarios as clear as they can;
And interacts with the whole team,
For he works with every man.

Week in, week out, from morn till night,
You can hear his thoughts flow;
You can see him schedule meetings,
His visio diagrams glow,
Like a rock in the sea
He faces every blow

Customers demanding new features
The requests come to his door;
He hears the product planner demand
He hears the developers roar,
Balancing the schedule and resources
Because ye dil maange more [because everyone wants more]

On weekends he takes the days off,
And parties with girls and boys;
Alls well and fun and frolic,
Till he hears his manager's voice,
New requirements, schedule resets
Adds flavor and the spice

Specing,--designing,--scheduling,
Onward through ship cycle he goes;
Each milestone sees some tasks begin,
Each RTM sees it close
Customer demanded, we provided,
Has earned a nights repose

Thanks, thanks to thee, my worthy friend,
For the lesson thou hast taught!
Each role has its special function
Every one plays his part
Together we create a successful product
That everyone can be proud of

Trying email publishing

Welcome to MSN Spaces

Finally MSN made its foray in the blogging arena. So here I am trying to check it out. It has to have a compelling set of features for me to switch from Blogger and MSDN Blogs.
